Sheikhs of Alazhar: Quranists are Apostates; and the Evidence from the Holy Book Proves Their Guilt

Alshark Alawsat in 07-08-30

Lately, the Quranists’ case occupied the Egyptian public and the religious circles. The Department of Islamic Research at Al-Azhar is currently studying the Fatwa prepared by the Sunna Committee at the department to consider the Quranists to be apostates if they insist to continue refusing the Sunna as a second source of Sharia . On the other hand, The Misdemeanor Court in Cairo decided to arrest what is known as “the Quranists Group” for more fifteen days for investigating the charges of Contempt of Religion, advocating non-stream ideas that cause disturbances in the society.
ALsharq Alawsat asked many Sheikhs of AL-Azhar whether there are proofs from the holy Quran that Sunna is a revelation from God (and since it should be considered as obligatory as the holy Quran)? Alsharq Alawsat asked as well whether these Quranists are really Muslims or not, and whether there are justifications for their call to rely on the holy Quran alone and ignore the Sunna?
Dr. Mohamed Said Tantawy, the Sheikh of AL-Azhar, replied saying that those who call for relying only on the holy Quran are ignorant, lairs, and do not know religious rules because the ideas in the Sunna came from God, but it was put into words by the prophet (Peace be upon him). Moreover, Sunna explains and clarify the rules mention as in the holy Quran.
Dr. Ahmed Eltayeb, the former Moftie (Official Fatwas Issuer), and the current president of AL-Azhar University, commented saying that such calls to separate between the Quran and Sunna are as old as Islam itself, implying that the prophet himself predicted such calls. Finally, Dr. Eltayeb added that without the Sunna, most of this religion would have been lost, and Islam would have been a religion of generalities without an identity.
As for Dr. Abdelhakim ELsayedi, a professor at Al-Azhar University, He relied on the Hadith that says “I came with the Quran and a similar book,” to prove that the Sunna is Godly. Not to mention that the holy Quran does not explain how should Muslims pray, pay charity, fast, or perform the pilgrimage.
Dr. Yousef Elbadry, a member of the Higher Assembly of Islamic Affairs, accuses the Quranists of having a strange logic because relying on the holy Quran only; while the Quran itself -as he claims- is in need for the Sunna,. Dr. ELbadry wonders what the Quranists say about verses like, “He who obeys the messenger obeys God?” Dr. Elbadry added that these Quranists went astray and should be considered apostates.
Dr. Mohamed Abdelmonem Elberry, a professor at the School of Hadith and Explanation, Al-Azhar University, stressed the point that most Muslims have always agreed on validity of the Sunna, whether it is the verbal of practical Sunna. “The holy Quran ordered us to obey the Messenger, and since this who do not are not true believers,” He added.
Dr. Mahmoud Ashour, a member of the Committee of Islamic Research, that the Sunna is indeed a source of the Islamic Sharia, and that those who deny it are illogical because it is impossible to understand Islam without the Sunna. Dr. Ashour stresses that denying the Sunna costs the Quranists to lose their faith. He then called to protect Islam against those Quranists who plan to destroy Islam and pose the greatest threat on Islam and Muslims. He finally accused the Quranists to be spies and agents for other forces to aim at destroying Islam from Inside, but God will protect his religion as he promised.

There are hadeeths that have our last prophet (God bless him), saying that ‘whoever writes down anything from me besides the Quran should erase it’ and other places where he and later Caliphs ordered hadeeths that were collected to be burned. All in all, the Quran is the only thing a follower of our last prophet is to follow and is the only thing that he himself followed and preached. The only way Sunnis and even in some cases Shias can explain many contradictions in the Hadeeth or what they see (from their traditioanlist views) as contradictions in the Quran is to fall on the blasphemous realm of abrogation. How can you claim that God’s word is abrogated?!

They are in no place to claim that any of God’s message has ever been abrogated. They are in no place to be taking the RUMOR about our last prophet as a reliable source without Quranic guidlines no rumor (needing 4 eye-witnesses per relater of rumor), and they are in no place to have the audacity to claim that someone who only follows the Quran, the very revelation that our last prophet was given, does not follow our last prophet.

They have no proof from the Quran just ‘ideena (bits and pieces) of the Quran that they twist with their toungues (yalwoonahu bi-alsinatihim) and distort (yuharrifoona). All to justify the political aims and traditions of their ancestors, and their political aims to this day.

Their intolerance, oppression of and murder of anyone who doesn’t believe like they do is proof that they don’t follow the Quran, because the Quran says laa ikraaha fiddeeni (not compulsion and coercion in religion) and lakum deenukum wa liya deeni (to your your way and to me mind). The last is what God told our last prophet to say to those who rejecting him and God. (the kaafir). Not it is okay to kill, harrass, jail them or throw them out from the country. Isn’t the oppression of Christians in these countries proof enough that these people have nothing in common with the Quran and in fact don’t even care about what it says?

They are in no place to claim that any of God’s message has ever been abrogated. The last is what our last prophet actually said (these verses begin with qul, to our last prophet) to those who reject him and God (the true kaafir is the kaffir to God who is a rejecter of, and traitor to God). The message of our last prophet (the Quran) never said it is okay to kill, harrass, jail or throw tthe kafir out from any country if he is not violent and a danger to anyone. Isn’t the oppression of Christians in these countries proof enough that these people have nothing in common with the Quran and in fact don’t even care about what it says?

These people are devils. First they prosecuted the shia and now they are going after our brethren quranists. Essentially these sunnis have hijacked islam and they terrorize anyone who does not agree with their disgusting fabricated hadiths. One day all the hadiths in the world will be burnt and everyone will be a quran-only muslim. It is just a matter of time before people wake up and see the evil of the hadiths and turn back to the true islam as communicated to our prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

well i think there is no way to oppose the idea of taking the koran alone, becuase those guys the Quranists’s Idea is more logic and understandable

The development of hadiths is largely political as well.
When hadiths were made it was 200 years after the prophets death, and it was based on this person said this person said this. Its largely like playing a game of broken telephone. The only way to know if the source is “sahih” is if the people saying the information was reputable. This does not take into account that peoples memories fade with time.

I understand that hadiths clarify meanings of certain things since people don’t like to study the qur’an and search the meanings, however, people think that just because you don’t follow exactly what the hadith says, it means you are not muslim. Just because everything is not “specific” does not mean that you aren’t a true believer. This may not go with mainstream islam, but i truly believe this is not “shik” since you are only following the words of god.
If you believe the words of another with the same magnitude as the words of god, then you are commiting shik. But that is my opinion.

Another thing i would like to mention is, if God, almighty intended on us incorporating our beliefs from the hadith, would it not be written in the qur’an? The very least, the prophet would have created hadiths in his lifetime in order to avoid this issue of authenticity. However, it was not made, unlike the qur’an which was recorded DURING the prophets life, so whatever was encoded was correct. One must also remember that SUNNAH does not mean sunnah of the prophet. Prior to this meaning, sunnah meant a particular way of life by islam. This could be a sunnah created by the qur’an. So this is not proof that we must follow the messengers every saying. And also when the qur’an says follow the messenger (pbuh), it does not mean follow what he said, it means follow the revelation he has revealed from God. There is a Surah in the Qur’an (i don’t remember exacly where) but i recall it saying that if the Prophet was to say any opinion, that he would have been stabbed in his heart, and we would not be able to help him. It is clear on God’s position on the issue of following anything but the Qur’an.

Just by following hadith, and holding it to such importance, you contradict yourselves in what the Qur’an says. Especially since the Qur’an states that this is a COMPLETE book, with nothing taken out, and is the guideline for humanity. Now by using the hadith, you are implying that the Qur’an is incomplete, are you questioning the words of God? Which is more important, the words of God, or the words of the prophet, WHICH may not be totally authentic.

I second that statement. If what Sithra said is true, then it is shirk to follow the hadiths of the Prophet (pbuh) if they contradict the word of the almighty Allah. The word of Allah is clear and concise, while the hadiths of the messenger (pbuh) are limited to the humans that declared them true. Allah is perfect in every way, and humans are flawed (memory, desires, etc.), and incomparable to our Creator.

Asalamualykom. I have been Muslim for 5 months now. When I was looking into islam( I was Christian) I read the Quran and feel in love with it. It made sense. Worship the One God, pray, give charity etc. I believed this book and became Muslim. Then I started going to some womens basic Muslim class…that’s where I started getting confused. Only hadiths were quoted and no Quran. I didn’t even now what hadiths were. So I researched. And I couldn’t believe the content in some…I thort did I make a mistake coming to Islam?? But I would read the Quran I remember what to believe. I read hadiths and yes some seem ok but there are some people just try and make you accept and no, I can’t. No one I know understands me.the sheiks and teachers just say u NEED the sunnah, u NEED to follow the Prophet threw the Hadith, wil fall out of the fold of Islam etc. It was Quran that brought me to believe.
Most non Muslims could read the Quran and agree it makes sense but give them the Hadith and they won’t come to Islam.

In the above article we read the words of some big shots at Al-Azhar …. Their words are full of false claims. Please allow me to expose their ignorance in the light of the Quran:

1- Dr. Eltayeb, a professor at Al-Azhar University says that without the Sunna of the prophet, most of this religion would have been lost, and Islam would have been a religion of generalities!
Reply : The Quran rejects any sunna other than the one of God:
“You will find that the Sunna of Allah is the only Sunna” (33:62….35:43…..48:23)

    please see:
    http://www.quran-islam.org/articles/a_dozen_reasons_(P1153).html

2- Dr. Abdelhakim ELsayedi, a professor at Al-Azhar University, He relied on the Hadith that says “I came with the Quran and a similar book,” to prove that the Sunna is Godly.

    Reply :
Muslims are commanded in the Quran not to believe ANY hadith other than the Quran, and thus it is futile to try to prove the validity of hadith by quoting yet another hadith!

“These are God’s revelations (Quran) that We recite to you truthfully. In which Hadith other than God and His revelations do they believe?” 45:6

3- Dr. Mohamed Said Tantawy, the Sheikh of AL-Azhar, says that those who call for relying only on the holy Quran are ignorant, lairs, and do not know religious rules because the ideas in the Sunna came from God, but it was put into words by the prophet.

    Reply:
Wrong again, the only revelation that the prophet received and is confirmed in the Quran is the Quran itself. In all the Quran there is no verse which implies that the prophet received from God any revelation other than the Quran:

“Say (O Muhammad) what is of the greatest testimony? Say: God is the witness between me and you, and this Quran has been inspired to me, that I may warn you and whomever it reaches” 6:19

4- Dr. Tantawy also added that the Sunna (of the prophet) explains and clarify the rules mentioned in the holy Quran.

    Reply:
Wrong again, the prophet was actually prohibited from explaining the Quran, these are Allah’s words to confirm:

[75:18] Once we recite it (Quran), you shall follow such a recitation.
[75:19] Then it is we who will explain it.

5- Dr. Mohamed Abdelmonem Elberry, also of Al-Azhar University, says “The holy Quran ordered us to obey the Messenger”

    Reply:
    Full reply given at:
    http://www.quran-islam.org/main_topics/misinterpreted_verses/_obey_god_(P1245).html

To conclude, these big shots of Al-Azhar are rejecting the Quran and are preaching a religion based on fabricated tales written over 200 years after the death of the prophet and also against his will.
    Salam,
    Muhammad

    Assalamu Alaikum,
I must say time has ripped for everyone that believes that hadiths are the sunna of our beloved prophet(S.A.W) to rethink and do-away with this conception, because there is no way the two things could be merged together. every one reads the holy quran will understand that the implementation of what is written in the quran is the sunna of our beloved prophet(S.A.W) and not the so-called hadiths which are just rumours and hearsay of some people that actually worked for the destruction of Islam. the truth is that whatever you may say the quranists are or whatever kind of judgement is read against them will never change anything from what Allah(SWT) has decreed for the world.Allah will undoubtfully fulfill his light even though the mushrikuns do not like.
