The current discourse surrounding Islam has delved into many discrepancies as the various religious figures take their turn in identifying the do’s and don’ts of the Islamic faith. As a result, religious societies are often found straying further and further away from the original scripture of the Quran, creating codes and values built on the numerous sources. While sources such as the Hadith and other Holy scriptures can no doubt aid in better clarifying and elaborating on points contained within the Quran, the Quran alone stands as the only stone-fixed code of the rights and wrongs of the Islamic religion.

Below are some random extracts taken from the various Islam-related popular websites available today that resonate the importance of “sticking” to the Quran, taking it back to basics.

The Quran is a complete book, See Quran 6:19,38,114, 115, 12:111 and 50:45.

• The Quran is detailed, and when God says He detailed His book it means FULLY detailed. God does not do half jobs. See Quran 6:114, 7:52, 11:1, 41:3, 10:37 and 12:111

• God does not need any addition to His book. God teaches us in the Quran that He does not run out of words and that if He so willed He could have given us hundreds, thousands or millions of books besides the Quran (see Quran 18:109). Since the Quran is complete, perfect and fully detailed, God did not give us any more books.

• God calls His book, the Quran, the BEST HADITH. HE called on His true believers to accept no other hadith as a source of this perfect religion . See Quran 7:185, 39:23, 45:6, and 77:50

• God calls on His true believers to make sure not to fall in the trap of idol-worship by following the words of the scholars instead of the words of God. See Quran 9:31

• God calls those who prohibit what He did not prohibit, aggressors, liars and idol-worshipers. Idol-worship is the only unforgivable sin, if maintained till death. See Quran 5:87, 9:37, 7:32, 6:119, 6:140 and 10:59

Muhammad is represented only by the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad was the last Prophet and a messenger of God (See Quran 33:40). He was not the messenger of God because of who he (Muhammad) was, but because he was given the Quran (the message) to deliver to the world. The religion of Islam is a religion of God, not about Muhammad, who was blessed by God with the delivery of the message of the Quran. He did not have an agenda of his own. His job was to deliver to the world what God was giving him, the Quran. See Quran 42:48, 13:40, 5:99-100

Muhammad cannot prohibit things, or make lawful things on his own. When he tried to do that God admonished him publicly, see Quran 66:1

66:1 reminds us that God is the only ONE to prohibit or make things lawful.

NO ONE can attribute to Muhammad a prohibition that God did not give him in the Quran. Anyone who tries to do so is admitting his/her refusal of God’s words and commandments in the Quran.

• The TRUE believers KNOW that when God says something, He means it, and when He does not, he means it as well. Everything given to us in the Quran was done deliberately and everything left out was also left out deliberately.

• God does not forget. See Quran 19:64. We are not to add to this religion what God deliberately left out and claim it to be from Him or His messenger. His messenger has only ONE message, the Quran. God already told us He does not run out of words. See Quran 18:109

• God does not need us to improve on His book, the Quran , but we very much need Him for every aspect of our lives. Those who think they have some improvement on the Quran are but asking for recognition of their idols as gods besides the ONE and ONLY GOD.

• God calls on His TRUE believers to verify every piece of information they see, hear or read, see Quran 17:36. So, Please VERIFY for yourself.

• There are indeed verses of the Quran that clearly order all believers to obey God and His Messenger. As believers living contemporary to the Messenger’s life, obeying the Quran goes hand in hand with obeying the Messenger as He is the most knowing and the most capable of explaining God’s orders. However, for all believers following the Messenger’s death, it is essential to follow the Message itself rather than any other texts. The Bukharis, Muslim, Ibn Majahs, Tirmidhis and Abu Dawuds, though they can be guiding and educational texts, are not integral to the Message – adequately and wholesomely contained in the Quran.

Hadith is the same as the gospels of Christianity. Indeed the time span between death of Messenger Muhammad, and the compilation of the Sahihs was almost the same as that between the departure of Jesus, and compilation of the Bible. How can Muslims reject one but accept the other?

• God has protected only the Quran — not Islam — from corruption.

• Human intellect alone cannot solve life’s problems. God’s revelation is required for human guidance in the same way that vision requires light.

• God’s revelation in its complete and final form is safely preserved in the Quran. This is the universal and permanent source of guidance for humanity for all time. Therefore, no further revelation, nor any prophet, nor any messenger from God can come now. The Quran is the final book of God and Muhammad His last prophet and messenger. see The Quaranic Code 19 video

• Every claim of the Quran is based on reason and knowledge, and its truths are beyond space and time. In order to comprehend Quranic truths, it is essential to keep abreast of the advances made in human knowledge. And since God has endowed human beings with the ability to conquer the forces of nature, it is necessary that these forces be conquered only to fulfill God’s program for humanity.

• The life and character of the Prophet (P) represents the pinnacle of human dignity, decency, and greatness. His exemplary life is the best role model for humanity. There is no doubt about that part of the Prophet’s life which is preserved in the Quran. However, in regard to the part which is outside the Quran if there are historical narrations which contradicts the Quran, or if they go against the high moral character of the Prophet (P), then these narrations are to be questioned and should not be attributed to the Prophet (P). The same applies to the lives of his companions (R). see 19 Questions for Muslim Scholars

•The Quran states frequently that there is no compulsion in religion(2:256; 10:99; 88:21,22). The Quran advocates perfect freedom of belief and expression (18:29). The basic law regulating relations with unbelievers is stated in 60:8,9. Apostates can not be killed unless they fight against the believers (4:90). However, according to hadith and sunnah, a person who leaves Islam should be killed which we totally reject.

• The goal of the Deen is to promote obedience to the laws of God by freeing human beings from obedience to other human beings. Such obedience to the laws of God is only possible through the establishment of a system of government based on these laws. Without this, the Deen (or the system of life based on the Quran) is not possible. see Islam Way of Life

• The prophet (P) established this system of Deen for the first time in Medina. In this system, obedience was due to the laws and injunctions of the Quran. Matters of government, for which the Quran outlines only principles, were decided within the limits of those principles by mutual consultation of the Ummah.

• After the PROPHET (P), the rightly guided khalifas continued this system. That is, obedience was due only to the laws and injunctions of the Quran. Matters pertaining to the state, for which the Quran gives only principles, were decided within the limits of these principles by mutual consultation of the Ummah. This form of rule is known as “Khilafat ‘Ala Minhaj-e-Risalat” or governance in the footsteps of the Prophet (P).Unfortunately, “Khilafat ‘Ala Minhaj-e-Risalat” did not continue because of the introduction of monarchy. Thus the system of Deen disappeared which, in turn, led to the disintegration of the Ummah. During the period of “Khilafat ‘Ala Minhaj-e-Risalat“, all matters (secular and temporal) were under the system of Deen. After the disintegration of the Ummah, a dualism was created which separated religion and politics. That trend continues till today. see 19 Questions for Muslim Scholars

• As Muslims, our job is to establish once again the “Khilafat ‘Ala Minhaj-e-Risalat” which requires people to follow God’s laws. However, those who want to lead this effort must first bring their own lives under the fold of the laws of God.

• The system of Deen (“Khilafat ‘Ala Minhaj-e-Risalat“) which encompasses all aspects of life, if established, will cause the current dualism to disappear. Instead of turning to the government to decide political matters, or to the priesthood for personal and religious matters, people will turn to the Deen or laws of God, since both these institutions will be absorbed in the system of Deen. see Islam Way of Life

• Until this system of “Khilafat ‘Ala Minhaj-e-Risalat” is established, no individual has the right to demand change in the way different groups within the Ummah practice the five pillars of Islam, or come up with any new way and call it the way of “God and the Prophet (P).” see Salat , Zakat and Hajj

• The purpose of the system of Deen, based on the Quran, is to allow the development of the latent potential of human beings according to the permanent values given by God. Hence, it is necessary that this system accept the responsibility of providing the basic needs of life, such as food, housing, education, health care, etc. to all human beings. see Islam Way of Life

• We consider all those who claim to receive revelation (Wa’hi) from God as Prophets after Prophet Muhammad, to be outside the fold of Islam. see Living through an uncreative tension: The case of Messianic thinking among Muslims

i think the whole thing is more simple than u will ever imagine…. religion is nothing but a way to contact yr higher power , feel secure in life , and above all its very private relation between a human and God “AS HE KNOWS HIM ” …. SO enough discussions about religions and lets work , learn , and produce and try to catch up with the world!!!!!!!!!

    Ahmad,
I must admit I was a bit suprised by your comment. Like you, I too believe relgion is a private matter. However, discussing religious theories and beliefs does not undermine the private nature of religion. On the contrary. I feel that you might be taking the easy way out, disregarding religious discussion altogether. Interestingly, this blog, which I often frequent, is not your typical website preaching religious beliefs. It is quite courageous and opens room for several controversial subjects. I feel, Ahmad, that you might be confusing religious practice with religious knowledge: the former is for sure private, yet the latter must be made public as the people need to share their knowledge to help enlighten others.
As for your point about “working, learning, and trying to catch up with the world”, I sense that this comment is somewhat of an overgeneralization, suggesting that religious discours is in opposition with work and progress. It is in fact religious ignorance that has lead to the lack of progress in many societies. Perhaps if more knowledge of Islam and the Quran would be spread around, more people would know that above all, Islam commands hard work and progress of all Believers and that religion goes hand in hand with enlightenment.

Hello, everyone. Religion is a private matter, but the archaic and corrupt clergy make it a public matter. We have to overcome all of that to re-establish the true faith of Islam. Then, the whole world will be able to see its beauty, and not just the bad things associated with the Deen.

To claim that none receives divine revelation after Muhammad is to block human progress. It is sheer misconception. God reveals Himself to everyone in some way or other, if he or she strives sincerely for such revelation. In fact we are blind so long as we do not see through our own experience confirmation of God’s truths revealed through the divine books brought by earlier prophets. Muhammad (peace be upon him) is an excellent example for us. This means that we need to emulate him in a way that enables us to catch the divine impulse or inspiration. Otherwise, we grope in the dark. Why should God limit Himself in revealing Himself; i.e., in giving inspiration or revelation to selected people? He is impartial. He cannot favor a few selected people. Muhammad is the last prophet whose revelations are our guidance. But that does not mean that revelations have been stopped for good and that no person after Muhammad will be able to receive His revelations. In fact, reaching the stage when man can receive God’s inspiration or revelation is the most coveted stage one can reach. For God’s sake, please do not block this path. Of course, it is a very difficult path. Few of the people who try this strenuous spiritual path succeed to receive God’s mercy to receive at least some inspiration.

False prophets fulfilling false prophecies (except Jesus of Nazareth )

    Jewish messiah claimants

The Jewish Messiah originally meant a divinely-appointed king; David and Cyrus the Great and Alexander the Great[1] are examples of such. Later, especially after the failure of Bar Kokhba’s revolt, it came to represent a figure who would deliver the Jews from oppression and usher in a new world.

    * Judas of Galilee (?), son of Hezekiah/Ezekias, member of the Zealots faction who led a bloody revolt against a Roman census in AD 6. (JA18)
    * Simon (ca. 4 BC), a former slave of Herod the Great who rebelled.
    * Athronges (ca. 3 BC)
    * Jesus of Nazareth (ca. 4 BC – AD 30), a wandering prophet and teacher who was crucified by the Romans; Jews who believed him to be the Messiah were the first Christians.
    * Theudas (? – 46), who attempted a short-lived revolt against the Romans before being slain. (JA20.5.1)
    * “Egyptian Prophet”, c.55, (an allusion to Moses), with 30,000 unarmed Jews doing The Exodus reenactment massacred by Procurator Antonius Felix (JW2.13.5, JA20.8.6, Acts 21:38)
    * Menahem ben Judah (?), allegedly son of Judas of Galilee, partook in a revolt against Agrippa II before being slain by a rival Zealot leader.
    * Simon bar Kokhba (?- ca. 135), founded a short-lived Jewish state before being defeated in the Second Jewish-Roman War.
    * Moses of Crete (?), who in about 440-470, convinced the Jews of Crete to attempt to walk into the sea to return to Israel; he disappeared after that disaster.
    * Ishak ben Ya’kub Obadiah Abu ‘Isa al-Isfahani (684-705), who led a revolt in Persia against the Umayyad Caliph ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan.
o Yudghan (?), a disciple of Abu ‘Isa who continued the faith after Isa was slain.
    * Serene (?), who around 720 claimed to be the Messiah and advocated expulsion of Muslims and relaxing various rabbinic laws before being arrested; he then recanted.
    * David Alroy (?), born in Kurdistan, who around 1160 agitated against the caliph before being assassinated.
    * Nissim ben Abraham (?), active around 1295.
    * Moses Botarel of Cisneros (?), active around 1413; claimed to be a sorcerer able to combine the names of God.
    * Asher Lemmlein (?), a German near Venice who proclaimed himself a forerunner of the Messiah in 1502.
    * David Reubeni (1490-1541?) and Solomon Molcho (1500-1532), adventurers who travelled in Portugal, Italy, and Turkey; Molcho was eventually burned at the stake by the Pope.
    * A mostly unknown Czech Jew from around the 1650s[2].
    * Sabbatai Zevi (1626-1676), an Ottoman Jew who claimed to be the Messiah, but then converted to Islam; still has followers today in the Donmeh.
o Barukhia Russo (Osman Baba), successor of Sabbatai Zevi.
o Jacob Querido (?-1690), claimed to be the new incarnation of Sabbatai; later converted to Islam and led the Donmeh.
o Miguel Cardoso (1630-1706), another successor of Sabbatai who claimed to be the “Messiah ben Ephraim.”
o Mordecai Mokia (1650-1729), “the Rebuker,” another person who proclaimed himself Messiah after Sabbatai’s death.
o Löbele Prossnitz (?-1750), a proven fraud who nevertheless attained some following amongst former followers of Sabbatai, calling himself the “Messiah ben Joseph.”
    * Jacob Joseph Frank (1726-1791), who claimed to be the reincarnation of King David and preached a synthesis of Christianity and Judaism.
    * Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902-1994), a Lubavitch rabbi who tried to “prepare the way” for the Messiah; some followers believe him to be the Messiah

    Christian messiah claimants

Some verses in the Bible suggest that Jesus will come again in some fashion; various people have claimed to, in fact, be the second coming of Jesus. Others have been styled a new Messiah still under the umbrella of Christianity.

    * Simon Magus, mid first century
    * Montanus, who claimed to be the promised Paraclete, mid second century
    * Adalbert, a bishop who claimed miraculous powers circa 744; he was excommunicated by the Pope.
    * Tanchelm of Antwerp (ca. 1110), who violently opposed the sacrament and the Eucharist.
    * Ann Lee (1736-1784), a central figure to the Shakers who thought she “embodied all the perfections of God” in female form.
    * John Nichols Thom (1799-1838), a Cornish tax rebel.
    * Hong Xiuquan of China (1812-1864), claimed to be the younger brother of Jesus.
    * Bahá’u’lláh (1817-1892), born Shiite, he claimed to be the promised one of all religions, and founded the Bahá’í Faith.
    * Haile Selassie of Ethiopia (1892-1975), Messiah of the Rastafari movement. Never claimed himself to be messiah, but was proclaimed by Leonard Howell, amongst others.
    * Georges-Emest Roux (1903-1981), the “Christ of Montfavet,” founder of the Eglise Chrétienne Universelle.
    * Sun Myung Moon (b. 1920), claimant of being the Second Coming of Christ and founder of the Unification Church.
    * Yahweh ben Yahweh (1935-2007), born as Hulon Mitchell, Jr., a black nationalist and separatist who created the Nation of Yahweh and allegedly orchestrated the murder of dozens of persons.
    * Iesu Matayoshi (b. 1944), in 1997 he established the World Economic Community Party based on his conviction that he is God and the Christ.
    * Jung Myung Seok (b. 1945), claims to be the Second Coming of Christ, founder of Providence Church, and fugitive wanted for rape among other crimes
    * Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda (b. 1946), Puerto Rican preacher who has claimed to be “the Man Jesus Christ”, who is indwelled with the same spirit that dwelled in Jesus. Founder of the Growing in grace” ministries.
    * Inri Cristo (b. 1948) of Curitiba, Brazil, a claimant to be the second Jesus.
    * David Icke (b. 1952), of Great Britain, has described himself as “the son of God,” and a “channel for the Christ spirit.”
    * David Koresh (Vernon Wayne Howell) (1959-1993), leader of the Branch Davidians.
    * Maria Devi Christos (b. 1960), founder of the Great White Brotherhood.
    * Sergei Torop (b. 1961) who started to call himself “Vissarion,” founder of the Church of the Last Testament and the spiritual community Ecopolis Tiberkul in Southern Siberia.
    * David Shayler (b. 1965) (“Righteous Chav”) who declared himself the Messiah in 2007.

    Muslim messiah claimants

Islamic tradition has a prophecy of the Mahdi, who will come alongside the return of Isa (Jesus).

    * Syed Mohammad Jaunpuri (1443-1505), who travelled Northeastern India; he influenced the Mahdavia and the Zikris.
    * Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, ‘the Promised Messiah’ return of Jesus, founder of the Ahmadiyya religious movement.
    * Muhammad Ahmad (“The Mad Mahdi”) (1844-1885), who declared himself the Mahdi in 1881, defeated the Ottomans, and founded a short-lived empire in Sudan.
    * Báb (1819-1850), who declared himself to be the promised Mahdi in Shiraz, Iran in 1844.
    * Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan of Somaliland (1864-1920), who engaged in military conflicts from 1900 to 1920.

    * Dia Abdul-Zahra Leader of the Soldiers of Heaven. Died in the Battle of Najaf with Iraqi Forces in January 2007.

    Other/combination messiah claimants

This list features people who are said, either by themselves or their followers, to be some form of a messiah that do not easily fit into only Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

    * André Matsoua (1899-1942), Congolese founder of Amicale, proponents of which subsequently adopted him as Messiah.
    * World Teacher (unknown), claims to be the Maitreya and promised one of all religions; promoted by New Age activist Benjamin Creme and his organization, Share International.

Thank you, Sami, for concurring with my view on revelation. I believe, in light of this discussion, the paragraph under “About Us” where it is stated that “Therefore, no further revelation … can come now” should be withdrawn, and the paragraph appropriately modified/rephrased, as it in its current form sends a misleading message.

I am, of course, a firm believer in the Quran as our final comprehensive guidance. However, we should not rule out the possibility of new reformers coming with newer insights on the divine message. Extracting meanings from a divine text is a matter of interpretation after all. Human understanding, perception or interpretation of revelation, or of what constitutes religion, has been different from person to person and even from time to time for the same person depending on the level of his understanding and knowledge. Also, as Iqbal points out in his monumental “Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam”, we should distinguish between permanent principles given in the Quran and those texts whose meanings have been subject to human interpretation. The latter can vary with time and context and circumstances. The interpretations/opinions given by past Muslim scholars are not sacrosanct.

The Hadith has given us much fabrication. Instead of clarifying the Quranic text, it has created much confusion. In an overall way, the Hadith has given us a distorted view of Islam, fundamentally different from what the Quran really professes. This can be demonstrated with full documentation. The Hadith cannot be said to be the true Prophetic discourse, or true representation of the Prophet’s life and character. Just look at his private life described in “Sahih” Bukhari: It is a simply monstrous reading! It is really unthinkable how good Muslims can ever believe in such big lies. One commentator has spoken of the so-called the science of Hadith. This science is a white wash, pure and simple. Please read and think, my dear friend. Our (Muslims’)greatest tragedy is that we have stopped thinking and reading, even though the Quran repeatedly asks us to reflect and think and apply our akl or reason.

  21. September 16, 2007 at 8:05 pm

by new reformers do you mean human beings that may contribute to the divine message by finding more adaptable interpretations as a direct consequence of inspiration, or by new reformers do you mean those who advance religious rather than social purposes? Are u insinuating or at least suggesting by ‘new reformers’ that there are more messengers to be revealed to humanity ?

    My friends,

Peace to you, from a humble Christian.

If you are Muslim, I have a blog about radical Islam, but have been writing of late about bigots who think that all of Islam believes in the terrorists ideology. If any of you would like to answer them, I will leave the link below. I am not versed in Islam, but I am smart enough to know that all Muslims are NOT evil. Obviously since you are versed in Islam, you can answer their bigoted remarks. And your help would be greatly appreciated. I like some of the comments here and totally agree as you can see from some of my blog entries. Stefan, I noticed you stopped by, Thank you.

Thank you and peace to you, have a great day!! 😀

I am not insinuating or suggesting, Stefan, that another (other) prophet(s) is(are) coming after Muhammad with comprehensive message like his. I think, I clarified my position well in my first comment (of September 10) on revelation, to which Samy (My apologies, Samy, I misspelled your name last time) expressed agreement. There is definitely no need for further comprehensive message like the Quran to come in the future so long as the Quran (about which there is no doubt and which is well protected) remains with us in tact. However, does this preclude the possibility that other humans can also receive revelation after Muhammad?

Reaching the stage where one is capable of receiving divine revelation is a coveted stage for all – a spiritual goal for all of us. The Quran is clear on this: Angels come to God’s righteous (should be righteous enough) servants with His reassuring message that they have nothing to fear or grieve and that Heaven is their reward (41:30). Doesn’t the Quran state that God responds to the sincere prayer of His devotees?: When my servants ask thee (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then surely I am nigh; I answer the prayer of every suppliant when he crieth unto Me –Baqarah (2): 186.

How does God respond? Is it not divine communication, revelation or inspiration? The Quran refers to even non-humans receiving such inspiration (the stories of bees receiving a message about where to build their hives, of a bird giving information to Solomon about the Queen of Sheba’s throne and of an ant cautioning other ants to go out of Solomon’s path). Humans are definitely superior to animals and should do better than animals. God has breathed His own ruh (spirit) into humans (15:29; 32:9; 38:72). And also, hasn’t God made humans His representatives on earth? How does a man serve as a representative of God? He can do so when He strives to acquire His qualities in order to be able to act or create in His ways. Indeed some of God’s righteous servants can see/perceive with their hearts beyond what normal eyes can see and they have ears with which they can hear beyond what normal ears can hear: Have they not traveled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms that are blind (22:46).

I do not mean to interrupt your discussion with Stefan, but you made a good point and I would like to strengthen it:

“Have they not traveled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms that are blind (22:46).”

That’s it! So simple. It depends on how much we keep clean our hearts and our lives from the interference between us and God by implementing the rules stated by God as much as we can, and hearts can become to see the secrets of existence clearer and can receive inspirations from the divine. If the prophets can do this we can do it as well. They are the live samples of what a humanbeing is capable to be as long he/she observes the God’s rules.

But, still, since prophetship or messengership has ended with Muhammad. Even though there may be people who claim they receive inspiration from the God, we never, ever rely on them completely like they are prophets or messengers of the God, because they are not assigned as prophet or messenger any more, so they might not be ‘right’ on every point they make. Additionally, we cannot believe everything they claim since they cannot be titled as prophet or messenger. We still have to use our own conscious, our own mind, our own intelligence, our own determination, our own cognition, our own brain, etc. My sense is we cannot leave our responsibility to distinguish between right and wrong onto someone else’s shoulders any more.

We all have to be and to live like prophets to be able to receive inspirations from the God, since God would never stop to communicate with any of us:

“8:24: O you who believe! answer (the call of) Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which GIVES YOU LIFE; and know that Allah INTERVENES between man and his heart, and that to Him you shall be gathered.”

No doubt everybody are getting messages from God, but it is all up to us to be able to hear or not to hear well God’s whispers.

Thanks, Sukran. Let me also cite an excerpt from a marvelous, thought-provoking treatise on spirituality written by an Eastern sage:

We require no Nabi after Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah on him). But if somebody claims to be one, let him know that all atoms of the universe are to end in Nabuwat by emulating the last one which is real Quiamat or upgrading(,) for has not the same Creator created all of them? Every one of the minutest particles will have to return where they have come from and as it is only the Nabi who can meet the Creator, all others must go the same way to earn Divine audience. — Panaullah Ahmad, Creator and Creation, Bangladesh Islamic Foundation, 1986, pp. 140-141.

To cite Ahmad again, man needs to develop in such a way that he is able to receive and grasp the divine message or revelation: Prayer or so desire is not therefore ideal until and unless one can decipher the real swing or message either from the Divine Book, i.e., Revelation or from the universe or Nature which is the other form of the very same Book – ibid, p. 12. He further observes:

[T]he word (of God) reigns everywhere. But blessed is he who chooses to catch it. Want of effort or half-hearted effort can never reach it. The mind of one who makes little or no effort gropes in the dark, as the word does not reach him. – ibid, p. 15.

I dont see anywhere (and I have looked) which explains your position on the Hadith and Sira as well as history. But then you could be Shia and I dont know that either.
Could you point to a basic link that explains your position?

    Thank you

    Non-organised Qur’anic Muslims

sources such as the Hadith and other Holy scriptures can no doubt aid in better clarifying and elaborating on points contained within the Quran, the Quran alone stands as the only stone-fixed code of the rights and wrongs of the Islamic religion.

Very interesting Stefan. Interesting link. I will study that.

    Four questions:

    (i) How does your position differ from the Shia?
Because they also do not accept the Hadith or Sira.
AFAIK, the Quran is their sole authority.
Or would you say that some of their additional beliefs (not derived from the Quran) are not part of your belief system?

(ii) Some of the Hadith sheds light on events in the Quran.
Without the Hadith, certain parts of the Quran – no one would know what they are about.
Do you rely on exo-Quranic material to shed light on events within the Quran?

(iii) What can be said about Muhammad?
I think under your belief system Muhammad is more opaque – which is fine.
I take it that your knowledge of him is derived strictly from the Quran and nothing else?

(iv) What do you make of Caliphs Abu Bakr, Umar, Othman & Ali?
They are said to “rightfully-guided”. They personally knew Muhammad.
It is inconcievable that we in our century would have better understanding of Muhammad then they did. It is also inconcievable considering the length of time they spent with him, that they misunderstood his message.
Therefore I understand the period of Islamic conquest that started in their Caliphship must be in line with Islamic doctrine that they understood. Is that a fair assessment?

I’m sorry, Stefan, but when you say, you accept only hadiths which “are in accordance with the Holy Qur’an” and “do not blemish the personality of [Muhammad], therefore, you do accept some extra-Quranic Hadith, right?

  36. October 16, 2007 at 6:38 pm

    whats a Quranic Hadith ?

i do not accept any extra material but it is important to read books of Hadith to understand the mentality of the people and to know the differences between the Islam described in the Quran and the Islam we are living today.

It is important to read the bible and as a Muslim i believe that the word of God is there, but i use the Quran as the correction of all man-made interferences in the bible.

i use the same technique with books of Hadith.

What is a Quranic Hadith? Chapter 39, Verse 23: “Allah has revealed the most beautiful Al-Hadith in the form of a Book, consistent with itself, repeating: the skins of those who fear their Lord tremble thereat; then their skins and their hearts do soften to the celebration of Allah’s praises. Such is the guidance of Allah: He guides therewith whom He pleases, but such as Allah leaves to stray, can have none to guide.”

As for reading up on other books with Quran as the criterion just and only just for knowledge’s sake, I agree with you. Thanks for clarifying your viewpoint.

  38. October 16, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Thank you, Stefan, I totally agree with you.

Yes, we cannot use hadiths as a ‘divine’ religious source. We do not need any additional non-negotiatible source other than Qur’an itself. We may consider hadiths which ‘are not in violation of the Qur’an’, as same as other quotes provided from great minds of the past, perhaps even not exactly as Prophet’s words since they are the words of hadith providers, imams and religious leaders and reflects their understanding. We may agree or not agree with them.

  39. October 19, 2007 at 5:17 pm

    Stefan,

Your position on the Hadith “i accept only hadiths which “are in accordance with the Holy Qur’an” and “do not blemish the personality of [Muhammad]”, I think, leaves one like me uncomfortable. How do you judge whether a particular Hadith is in accordance with or consistent with the Quran? It may be easily possible to identify numerous Hadiths that are at odds with the Quran in some way or other. But in many other cases, the job of such identification may be difficult. Take as examples the following Hadiths:

    1. Allah has forbidden the (Hell) fire for those who say, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah for Allah’s sake only. (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 1, Book 8, # 417)

    2. A narration from Abu Huraira says that the Prophet reportedly suggested that whoever utters certain words of glorification such as “Sub-han-al-lah”, “Alhamdu-lillah” and “Allahu Akbar” (God is pure – above all, All praise be to God and God is great) thirty three times after every prayer could catch up with or overtake others in virtuous work except those who did the same (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 1, Book 12, # 804).

    3. Narrated Abu Mas’ud: The Prophet said: If somebody recited the last two verses of Surat Al-Baqara at night, that will be sufficient for him (for that night) (Sahih Bukari, Vol. 6, Book 61, # 560, 571).

    4. Abu Said al-Khudri states that the Prophet reportedly said that Surah Ikhlas # 112 was equivalent to one third of the whole Quran (Sahih Bukahri, Vol. 6, Book 61, 533, a similar text repeated in # 534).

    5. Narrated Humran: I saw ‘Uthman performing ablution; he […] said: I saw Allah’s Apostle performing ablution similar to my present ablution, and then he said: Whoever performs ablution like my present ablution and then offers two Rakat in which he does not think of worldly things, all his previous sins will be forgiven. (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 3, Book 31, # 155, also repeated at Vol. 1, Book 4, # 161 and 165)

    6. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “When the call for the prayer is pronounced, Satan takes to his heels, passing wind with noise. When the call for the prayer is finished, he comes back. And when the Iqama is pronounced, he again takes to his heels, and after its completion, he returns again to interfere between the (praying) person and his heart, saying to him. ‘Remember this or that thing.’ till the person forgets whether he has offered three or four Rakat: so if one forgets whether he has prayed three or four Rakat, he should perform two prostrations of Sahu (i.e. forgetfulness).” (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 4, Book 54, # 505)

    7. Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: The Prophet said: If while you are praying, somebody intends to pass in front of you, prevent him; and should he insist, prevent him again; and if he insists again, fight with him (i.e. prevent him violently e.g. pushing him violently), because such a person is (like) a devil. (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 4, Book 54, # 495)

    8. Narrated ‘Aisha: A man came to the Prophet and said that he had been burnt (ruined). The Prophet asked him: what was the matter. He replied, “I had sexual intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting).” Then a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet and he asked, ‘Where is the burnt (ruined) man?’ He replied, ‘I am present.’ The Prophet told him to give that basket in charity (as expiation). (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 3, Book 31, # 156)

    9. Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said: Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven. (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 1, Book 2, # 37)

    10. Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said: Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven. (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 1, Book 2, #34, 36; also Vol. 3, Book 31, # 125; Vol. 3, Book 32, # 231)

I could multiply such examples. The point I would like to make and emphasize is that even innocuous-looking Hadiths, which at first appearance may not look directly at odds with the Quran, can be misleading. All the cited examples are inconsistent with the overall message of the Quran that it is overall righteousness along with right beliefs that matters most, but this is detectable only on close scrutiny.

Our Muslim scholars who portray Islam in a good light do so by taking the best of traditions. However, the issue is not really about choosing between good and bad traditions; the issue is really about whether we should continue to rely on such traditions that often misguide us. It is a sheer waste of effort to look for grains in the chaff of the vast Hadith literature. Instead, we should concentrate on trying to understand and follow as our complete religious guidance our only Divine Book the Quran. Unfortunately Muslims pay scant attention to their Divine Book (This was also what our Prophet lamented – The Messenger said: O my Lord! Surely my own people have treated this Quran as a forsaken thing — [Furqan (25): 30]). They recite some of its verses mainly in salat, but that also without understanding their meanings. What a great pity!

  40. October 19, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Also, I have real doubt if you really gain any worthwhile “knowledge” by reading the Hadith literature, which is replete with inconsistencies and concocted or idle stories. Some scholars have questioned the Hadith as of any historical value. In fact, the very historicity of the Hadith itself, which has come more than two hundred years after the Prophet’s death, is questionable. Most Muslims are not even aware of this big time gap, which alone gives rise to serious problems of authenticity or authority of the Hadith as a religious scripture.

  41. October 23, 2007 at 5:50 pm

It is time all Muslims took a dispassionate look at the reliability of the Hadith as of any religious or historical value. The great damage done to our religion by the Hadith is evidenced by the simple fact that the ideas that seriously distort religious conceptions and practices, demonize and weaken women’s position in society, encourage fanaticism and fatalism, block progress and modernization, encourage intolerance, violence and terror and extol the virtues of aggressive jihad (“holy war”) against other communities – all come from the Hadith.

Also, is there any evidence that the Hadith “clarifies” the Quran? There are numerous examples one can cite where the Hadith has made for more confusion rather than clarification. Three glaring examples:

    1. One Hadith narrated by Ursa says that Aisha allegedly reported to her, in clarifying one Quranic verse [Nisa (4): 3] that a person who is the custodian of an orphan girl, and who is attracted by her wealth and beauty, cannot marry her if he cannot give her proper dowry (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 7, Book 62, # 2). Another Hadith in the same Vol. and book at # 35 disqualifies the guardian of an orphan girl to marry her if he mistreats her and does not manage her property well.
Comment: But this negates and clouds the real and clear point made by the particular Quranic verse, which says that if one fears that he is unable to do proper justice to an orphan in regard to her wealth, he should rather marry her. And this verse should also be understood in light of the preceding verse that urges the believers to do justice to orphans and not devour their property [Nisa (4): 2]. The two Hadith texts create an obstacle in the way of a guardian wishing to marry an orphan girl under his care, which is basically against the spirit of the Quranic message.

    2. Many translators (Yusuf Ali, Pickthall, etc.) of the Quran have translated the verse 36:38 as the sun running to an appointed “resting place” rather than to an appointed “term”. The “resting place” idea comes from the Hadith, which is more confusing.

    3. The infamous “hilla” system for remarriage of divorced wives to their husbands comes from the Hadith. The Quranic verse at 2:230 where it means that if a divorced wife marries aother man, she is unlawful to her former husband until her present husband divorces her. The Quran also clearly admonishes those who divorce their wives not to force them out of their houses before their term expires, and to make a choice between taking their divorced wives back or parting with them when the term expires (2:230; 65:2)and urges believers not to create any obstacles on the way of divorced wives remarrying their husbands (2:232). It is indeed unfortunate that our translators of the Quran have been influenced by the Hadith (Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 7, Book 63, # 249) where it states that a divorced wife is not eligible for remarriage with her husband until she weds another man and until that man divorces her. What a distortion! This abhorrent practice, which has destroyed many happy families, is still prevalent in Muslim societies. The concerned Quranic verse under discussion should read as follows:

And if he hath divorced her, she is not lawful unto him thereafter until another husband she hath married (after the divorce) hath divorced her. (In that case) it is no blame for both of them if they return to each other, and if they think they can keep within the limits (imposed by) God. And these are the limits ordained by God, which He maketh plain for a people who know. (2:230)

It is time all Muslims took note of the great damage the Hadith has done to us.

    Peace to you all,
I would like to share my “lawyer” view of the matter of Holy Quran and Hadith, maybe it would help.
Quran in my view, is God’s message, or humans’ manufacturer’s manual, if we can so call it, which includes, among other things, general and specific rules that relates to the governance of all aspects of humans ‘ life, belief, relation with God, self , others , animals, government and the environment. Which if one follows, he or she will be and live in an inner and absolute peace and heaven. Absolutely, Quran is God’s message and the evidence is its scientific and other miracles included in it and that nobody had or will or can come up with a book like it… and the bet is still open to date despite the Quran has been inspired by God to Prophet Mohamed more than a thousand years!!! There are plenty of books which talks about those miracles in the Quran that anyone can refer to….
God’s message – or Islam one self (remit yourself or leave yourself) to God – is since the early beginning to human is so simple, believe in me (I mean God)as the sole and exclusive god who created you and who should be exclusively worshiping me, believe in my messengers and messages, Prophit Moses, Prophet Jesus, Prophet Mohamed and all the previous messengers and prophets, be good to yourself, others, animals and the environment, believe in judgment day, evil and angels, and heaven and hell. What’s easier or Simpler than that?? I think any natural human being will distinctly believe so. Despite the simple message, which regardless of religious believe will make our world a different one, humans, since the Adam till now are unable to follow it or believe it, specially Muslims of nowadays.. What a petty.
Logically, this holy message (Quran) could have been sent by God to Humans without a messenger. So why God has sent this holy message by or thorough Prophet Mohamed ?? why ??
In my view, the pure rules included in the Quran, may be understood or interpreted in different ways, and therefore, the reasons for sending a messenger logically includes:
    – In order for the messenger to show the people, what’s the right view or interpretation of those rules, how to understand and apply those rules on real circumstances, events or cases or simply to give us the ideal example on how to apply those rules in real life scenarios for people who live in or after his era as he is the last and final prophet and messenger as mentioned in Quran.
As far as I know, it is mentioned in the Quran, and please correct me if I am wrong, that Prophet Mohamed, peace upon him, is the last Prophet and messenger. Which indirectly means that the teachings of Prophet Mohamed may be took as an ideal example on how to apply the Quran’s rules anytime and anywhere after his death, otherwise god would have to send additional messengers or prophets after Prophet Mohamed death.
Accordingly, in my view, the answer to the question, which most of Muslims don’t agree on; what are the sources of Islam?? Some will say Quran Alone, others will say, Quran and Sunna, Others say “Igtehad” or “egma3” or “Keyass” or, others may add “previous Holy religions” (only Jewdism and Christianity)…
Actually, the question needs to be redrafted, what we mean by the question is different of its wording, it is obvious that Islam’s only source is the Quran..so why other Muslims say other source for the Islam or Islamic Law or rules…
The question should rather be; Where should I resort to to understand the Quran or Islam or Islamic Law?? I would answer …you should resort to Quran, Hadith and all the rest of the sources mentioned above. Not because the Quran is incomplete or needs additional material or interpretation to clarify it but for limited knowledge people like us to understand it. We are the incomplete not the Quran..So for someone who want to know the rules mentioned in the Quran or how to apply it, such person may review the Hadith provided it is reasonably authentic.
God’s holy messages usually come to messengers and prophets through what’s called “Wahy” or inspiration from god which is usually confirmed or proved to people by “Mo3gezat” or miracles, that each prophet or messenger has his own(Prophets; Moses – the stick, Jesus-to cure patients, Mohamed – the Quran, peace upon them all etc..). So this inspiration of a holy message or prophecy from God will no more go to any other messenger or prophet after Prophet Mohamed as mentioned in the Quran.
However, I have heard scholars talk about “Elham” and “karama or karamat”, elham means also inspire but to normal people, Karama means special knowledge, talents or skills, I believe both are sorts of blessings from God. Those inspires and karamat are tools or methods which god only gives as reward or help to specially or very good and high spiritual people not average ones. Example of those people in Quran is the story of (El Khedr) and Prophit Moses, peace upon him. Those Elham and Karama are not terminated, which means that it is still continued with normal people and not terminated after the death of Prophet Mohamed, peace upon him. I am sure that to date there are and will always be those people with special blessings from God as they deserve it in this life before the other.
So as long as, we can be reasonable sure that the Hadith is authentic to Prophet Mohamed, such Hadith will definitely be of a help. This does not mean that the Quran is not complete or needs any additional material, but we are, humans are and will always be not perfect. Guys, those teachings of Prophet Mohamed are a great cultural and religious heritage as said by the world, which can not be all left behind if not all taken into consideration. There is material evidence that at least part of the present Human civilizations is derived from those teachings, it is not possible that the world takes and benefits from our culture and religious heritage and we leave it.
But who decides whether a hadith is authentic or not ?? that’s a different issue, maybe in some other time we shall deliberate it.
Even though my views are more or less different from than the majority of this web-site visitors, one can not say that it is a very interesting one, thanks to Stephan and all the rest of the visitors. We spent hours and hours watching and talking about soccer, God and all his messengers definitely deserve more of our time talking and thinking about them, and accordingly reach the inner and the ultimate peace and heaven in this life and the other.
Finally, maybe I am right maybe I am wrong, god knows. God bless you all and peace to you.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Merry Christmas? How can you wish people who blaspheme God, by likening Him to a man and giving Him human attributes of having a son, a merry time while they do it? Have you not read the beginning of soorah kahf?
Jesus never asked people to worship him, and never claimed to be the son of God, this is a lie against Jesus, may peace be upon him, he was a righteous man, whom God chose to guide people, by calling people to worship God. And he delivered his message. He never asked people to celebrate his birthday either, and the prophet Mohammed, who had the same role as Jesus, delivered his message and never celebrated the birth of jesus, nor did he ever wish any christians a merry Christmas, as that would be hypocritical to his call. may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon mohAmmed.

As a Christian, I have a lot of friends of different faith, including Islamic as well as Jewish.

What I am finding out is, as in my Christian society, there are different branches or denominations – just as in the Christian faith. Tolerance is the Word of the Day. We all believe in the One God, whether he is call Allah or any other name, he is still the One God that we all believe in.

While Muslims believe, as do the Jews, that Jesus was a prophet – and he is recognized in the Quran, Christians believe that Jesus was God incarnate, in the human flesh and lived as man to pay for man’s original sin by dying on the cross for our salvation; rather than just believing that he was a prophet as the two other main religions believe. Does that some how make us sinister, the anti-Christ or Satan? I hardly think so …

There is a great need in today’s multi-cultural society for tolerance, love and acceptance of all who seek the Word of God. In the beginning there was the Word and the Word was Allah/God.

Pray for peace, for all mankind was made in his image … and the Christian Bible says that God said that it was good …

Peace be with you … and all of us together

Maybe I’m being iffy but a complaint about style, if you will entertain me. The font for the content items on this site is inappropriately oversized and makes me want to believe (paradoxically) that the maintainers are myopic. Could you stick to 10 point font sizes like the rest of web? That would be great!

If you are a novice gambler you probably haven’t heard the term but professional bettors who earn their livelihood from sports betting use the method all the time taking advantage of the variance in odds from the opinions of the diverse number of bookmakers. Even though it sounds as if it is a no risk situation that may not always be the case and there some issues that can cause you to lose.

Following the philosophy of pyramiding, what happens in this system is that you place a bet and if you come out a winner you re-invest the winnings on the next wager. So in horse racing, for example, you simply let it ride. Also, unlike the other betting systems, the Parlay System offers a lower amount of risk of all bettors for because they only need be concerned with a win, place or show selection or a combination thereof.

The changes that are going to be made to the Wire Act are quite simple. First and foremost the internet will be added to the list of wire communications that are prohibited. Of course the internet was not around in 1961 so it was not included in the first draft. In addition, penalties for breaking the Wire Act will increase from a maximum of two years in prison to five.

From the above, therefore, you can see that finding a good Selection System and sticking to it is the only way to go if you are truly serious about making money at sports betting.

  74. May 17, 2010 at 1:40 am

If you’re like me when you first saw the term “arbitrage sports betting” you just said, “huh?” You may even be reading this article because you were wondering. It is a relatively little method that can actually allow you to make money no matter who wins or loses. Kind of like heads I win, tails I win!

The Parlay System is one of the most famous of betting systems that are commonly used in horse racing. Many have said that contrary to other sports betting systems, the Parlay System has a pyramiding effect on your profit which means your winnings are played on successive wagers.

It appears that the United States legal system is closer than ever before to cutting off ties with any type of online gambling within its boundaries. This includes poker, casinos, and sports betting among others. Generally speaking, anything that has to do with transmitting money via the internet as far as gambling is concerned is being cracked down on quite harshly.

Another important subject I must briefly refer to is “catch-up” staking. If you find that you need to employ this tactic regularly, it means three things: (1) your Selection System sucks, (2) you haven’t got a clue about what constitutes a proper Staking Plan, and (3) you have turned your chances of regularly and quickly losing your Base Bank to a 100% certainty!

I’ve just come across your website; you complain that Islam is being maligned and Muslims are discriminated against and yet I see you provide a link to gaymuslims.org who is run by a bigoted individual (who refuses to be held to account for his views – hides behind the anonymity of the internet) and you’ve hosted an article full of old wives tales about homosexuality. Why should I, in the remotest sense of the word give you any respect what so even based on your views. Respect is earned not simply granted by virtue of breathing oxygen – want respect, get that chip off your shoulder first.

Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allâh, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for Allâh can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily Allâh is well- acquainted with all that ye do.”

Qur’an: chap. 42 verse 13. “The same Religion has He (God) established for you as that which He enjoined on Noah – the which we have sent by inspiration to Thee – and that which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: namely, that ye should remain steadfast in religion, and make no divisions therein: to those who worship other things than Allah (God), hard is the (way) to which thou callest them. Allah chooses to Himself those whom He pleases, and guides to Himself those who turn (to Him).”
